Riding bikes is a normal part of childhood, and not something that either of my kids have been able to participate in. 😞 Rumor was that Mila had access to a bike in her prior life, but there was no way to confirm that. And her hip issues made me doubt that she could manage a two wheel bike. And, until recently, Isaac hasn't had the core strength that is needed to pedal a bike independently. The lonely little red trike in the garage has been a sad reminder of something else that we just couldn't do.
Rewind to last summer and both kids were given access to adaptive bikes during 'bike day' at day camp. Our sweet nanny sent me videos and I was shocked to see that both kids could not only manage but skillfully drive adaptive bikes--and they were having fun! I teared up to see them enjoying something that had been withheld from their lives. I casually mentioned to our school physical therapists last fall the great physical strength both kids had on the (very expensive) adaptive bikes and she said 'there is a special program to get free adaptive bikes for the kids...you knew that right?!" NO, I didn't know that! Let's get my kids some bikes!
It took nearly a year, but both bikes arrive the same day this weekend:
